Thieves have ransacked a community sports club while children played football nearby.
Mobile phones, wallets, car keys and money were taken from the changing block at Vernon Carus Cricket and Sports Club on Factory Lane in Penwortham on Wednesday night as friendly pre-season matches between Cardinal Newman, New Longton and Penwortham Town football clubs were taking place.
One man, who’s children play for one of the teams who were playing on the night, has described the thieves as “heartless.”
The man, who did not wish to be named said: “There were a few pre-season friendly games going ahead for both the adult and youth teams when we were told that someone had been in the changing rooms and taken a lot of personal belongings.
“When we heard, it became quite chaotic as everyone was running over to the block to see what had happened.”
He continued: “It has caused such distress to everyone involved, especially the young ones.
“The kids playing football aren’t doing any harm to anyone and for this to happen is just heartless.
“Obviously we want to alert the public about these thefts and to let them know that they shouldn’t take any personal belongings to their football games.
“Take nothing but your boots basically, that’s what I would recommend!”
Lancashire Police said they had taken “numerous calls from a number of people who were involved in the incident” that happened in four of the changing rooms at the sports club between 6.30pm and 8pm.
Anyone with information regarding the incident can call police on 101.
