Five schoolboys have been arrested in connection with a huge fire which has badly damaged a Leyland school.
More than 100 fire-fighters from all across the county battled for more than three hours to bring the flames under control at Leyland St Mary’s Catholic Technology College last night.
The suspects, aged between 11 and 15, were arrested last night, hours after the blaze started.
Lancashire’s chief fire officer Chris Kenny took personal charge of the operation and admitted: “There are strong grounds to think that it may have been suspicious.
“A full investigation together with the police is underway. This is a very big fire.”
The school’s staff were due to report back to work this morning after the long summer break. More than 700 pupils were scheduled to return tomorrow and a big operation is now being mounted by County Council education chiefs to make alternative arrangements for their schooling.
