Fire crews were called to tackle a blaze at a home in Leyland.

Two fire engines from Leyland and Bamber Bridge raced to the home in Cheetham Meadow, Moss Side, at about midday on Thursday.

Fire crews had to force entry to the home, which was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.

Watch manager Shaun Thornley said: “We attended a house fire that we believe may have started around the fuse box area. We used four breathing apparatus, and because the stairs had burnt away, two fire fighters went in through the front door after we forced an entry, and two went in through a first floor window.”
He said crews were called at about 12.35pm, after the fire began under the stairs.

He said: “One of the neighbours had returned home from work and when he entered his own house he smelt the smoke and came outside and saw the smoke from upstairs.

“We were informed when we arrived there was nobody in and we had to force entry.

“I think it had been burning for some time. If one of the windows had failed the fire would have developed rapidly and spread to other properties.”

Police described the fire as accidental and non-suspicious.
