Classical music fans snapped up more than 1,000 tickets for a Guild show featuring superstar Katherine Jenkins on the first day of sales.

Tickets for the Proms in the Park event, which will see the Welsh beauty take to the stage with José Carreras, went on sale at 10am yesterday to residents living in the PR1-5 postcodes.

And of the 10,000 tickets available, 1,128 had been bought by 3pm by those keen to see the stars in action.

The tickets are on sale to people living in these areas until 5pm today and they will go on general sale tomorrow.

The two-hour show at Avenham Park on Friday, September 7, is set to be one of the highlights of Guild Week.

It will be the first time that the pair have performed together and it is expected to attract fans from across the country.

A spokesperson for Preston Council said: “The council is delighted with the number of Proms tickets sold on the first day.

“Prestonians are urged to act quickly to secure their place, before the general release on Thursday.”

The Welsh mezzo-soprano has sold seven million records worldwide and has recently enjoyed huge success in America, staring on the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.

And José, who sang with Placido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti as part of the Three Tenors, confirmed earlier in the year that he will appear for the Guild date, his first UK concert in three years.

Priced at £65, the tickets can be bought by calling 0845 344 2012 or by calling into the box office at the Guild Hall.

From tomorrow, the tickets will also be available from.prestonguild2012.com or www.prestonguildhall.com
