A battling mum is recovering in hospital after undergoing a potentially lifesaving double lung transplant.
On Sunday the family of Natalie Kerr, 30, said that doctors at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital had told them they were hoping to decrease her medication, allowing her to breath without assistance.
Dad Eric wrote on his daughter’s web page: “Natalie started to come round and was very uncomfortable but was talking and wanted a drink. She found it hard but taking deep breaths and also coughing ,signs that the lungs are working well. Such a relief to see her opening her eyes and look at us. This is not an easy ride, just hope she will remain a fighter.”
She received a call at home on Thursday night with her children when she received the long-awaited call to tell her a match had been found and that she was being called in for the operation..
Mum-of-two Natalie, from Adlington, Chorley, was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2008 while in labour with her second child Isabelle.
The condition causes high pressure in the arteries of her lungs, and eventually leads to heart failure. Natalie, who worked as a nurse at Bolton Hospital, was warned she would only live for three more years.
But she continued to defy the odds, undergoing revolutionary stem cell treatment in the US after her family helped raise £40,000 to fund the trip.
However, after initially being given a new lease of life, her condition rapidly deteriorated and her only hope was the double-lung transplant.She requested a picture of son Brendon, nine, and Isabelle, be at her side when she wakes up.
