Ex Post Office worker in court

A man has appeared before magistrates accused of a £6,000 theft from a Preston post office.

Jishaan Patel, 24, of Longsands Lane, Fulwood, Preston is accused of commiting the theft, from Blackpool Road post office in Ashton-on-Ribble, between October 2011 and January 2012. He denies the offence.

His case will be committed to Preston Crown Court on November 27.

It is understood the former assistant was arrested after motorists who bought and paid for road tax discs at the branch alerted the DVLA after receiving disabled tax discs - for which no duty is paid - through the post.

A Post Office spokesman would not comment on the individual case but said: “The Post Office believes that all people working in Post Office branches hold a unique position of trust. The overwhelming majority of people who work in our branch network are professional, honest and provide the highest standards of service possible so it is always disappointing when that trust is breached.”

“The Post Office takes a zero tolerance policy to the rare incidents of dishonesty.”
