Farwell: Doctors Terry OConnor and Alan Wilkinson retire after many years at St Fillans

Two doctors from a Penwortham practice are set to hang up their stethoscopes for the last time.

Dr Terry O’Connor and Dr Alan Wilkinson who have worked at St Fillan’s Medical Centre in Liverpool Road will leave the practice at the end of month.

Earlier this week past and present staff members joined with them for a farewell party.

Dr O’Connor, 61, from Fulwood, said: “We have been GPs for a long time and it has been an incredible privilege.

“We get to know our patients as a family.

Dr O’Connor, who has been at the practice for 33 years, said: “It has been an absolute privilege to look after people.”

Of his plans for retirement, he added: “I have got a grandchild who seems to take up more time than you would expect.”

Dr Wilkinson, 60, who has worked at the surgery for 32 years said: “I have loved every minute of it.

“I have always enjoyed the patient contact and the basic medicine.

“I can remember when I was starting out, a little girl who was five at the time, as she was walking out she said to her mum ‘he’s a really nice old man.

“Now she will have children of her own. I always remember her saying that.”
