Delivery driver saves diabetic man’s life

Latest news from the Lancashire Evening Post

Latest news from the Lancashire Evening Post

A heroic Iceland delivery driver saved the life of a diabetic man left helpless for 12 HOURS after collapsing at home.

Karl Wild, 28, got no response when he tried to drop off Peter Dunne’s shopping at his house in Egerton Street, Failsworth, Oldham.

Quick-thinking Karl feared something was wrong and called police – who arrived and broke down the door.

They found Peter, 49, helpless on the floor after suffering a potentially-fatal hypoglycemic attack. Officers said he was just hours from death.

Peter was rushed to the Royal Oldham Hospital where he was stabilised before being released.

Now he has been reunited with Karl to say thank you for saving his life.

Peter, who has since moved to Anvil Way, Coldhurst, Oldham, said: “I just collapsed. I was on the floor for about 12 hours.

“Karl phoned the police because he couldn’t get in contact with me and they broke in and found me.

“The police got me into the ambulance and rushed me to the hospital. I can only thank Karl – and I haven’t had the opportunity to properly until now.”

Karl said he knew there could be a problem because Peter was almost always home.

Other drivers had also attempted to deliver shopping to the house, but got no response.

Karl, from Failsworth, said: “I called the police and explained that it was not like him to not to be in. Within ten minutes the police were knocking his door in.

“I waited outside for the police and paramedics to finish before one officer pulled up alongside me and said: ‘Thank you, you’ve just saved his life – he was hours away from being dead’.”

Peter’s condition was monitored in hospital and he underwent surgery to remove gangrene in his toes, which can be caused by diabetes damaging blood vessels. Doctors are continuing to keep and eye on him and making sure he goes back for regular check-ups. Karl’s bosses at Iceland in Oldham hailed their heroic driver.

Helen Tindle, personnel director, said: “We are very proud of Karl and his quick thinking.”
