A father is seriously ill in hospital after being knocked unconscious during a fracas outside a pub.

The victim, who is in his 40s, is understood to have suffered bleeding from his ear after allegedly being punched in the head.

The alleged incident happened outside O’Neill’s on Friargate, Preston, in the early hours of Sunday.

Onlookers reported seeing police tape outside the pub and Mick’s Pizza Bar.

Police said they were called to the scene at 12.55am.

It is understood the victim is being kept under sedation at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Darryl Shaw, 25, of Lawson Street, Preston, has been charged with a single count of wounding.

He was given bail by magistrates and will next appear at Preston Crown Court on March 25, 2014.
