The devastated father of a young man killed when he crashed into a lamp post today begged parents of mini moto riders to think twice before letting their loved ones use them.

Collin Mayor, 22, from Ingol, was riding a mini-moto along Pope Lane in Ribbleton in April but lost control of the off road bike as he was turning into Miller Road, colliding with a kerb before hitting a lamppost.

He died a day later from multiple serious injuries.

An inquest at the coroner’s court in Preston on Wednesday heard he was not wearing a helmet.

Coroner Mr Simon Jones returned a verdict of accidental death.

In an emotional plea, his dad Dave Mayor, from Ingol, speaking after the inquest, said: “ This is any parent’s worst nightmare. It should never happen. I wouldn’t want it to happen to anyone.

“They don’t realise how dangerous these things are. They should only be used in proper areas, with supervision and proper kit on. Not on a road, they shouldn’t be there.

“Collin was doing 30 mph and he died. If he’d been on track and wearing a helmet he would still be with us.

He added: “I’ve seen little kids on mini-motos on the roads, parents need to be stopping them doing it, so it doesn’t happen to them. They don’t want to go through what I’ve had to.”

Sgt Jon Allwright of the Force Road Policing team said: “This was a tragic accident that has left a huge hole in the family’s lives. But ultimately it could have been prevented.

“Mini-motos are not for use on the road, they do not meet the standards required.

“The only place they should be used is on private property with the land owners consent. And then they should be used with the correct protective clothing.”

He added: “This vehicle was capable of travelling at 50mph, yet Collin had no protective clothing or helmet on.

“I would reiterate what Dave Mayor said, parents need to look after their children and if they have access to a mini-moto then it is only ever used in a safe and controlled manner.”
