Dad did not pay support

A FATHER who failed to pay more than £3,000 in child support for his son has been in court.

Christopher Spiteri, 34, of Pendle Court, Wesham, near Kirkham, admitted not paying child support.

He was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment which was suspended on the condition he pays a total of £80 a week for his son.

Spiteri was warned by Blackpool magistrates that if he failed to make a payment he would brought back to court and was likely to be jailed immediately.

Marjorie Lewthwaite, prosecuting for the Child Support Agency, said Spiteri had previously been fined by a court for failing to provide information about his finances to the CSA. Spiteri had paid no maintenance for his son between August 2008 and October 2010 and owed £3,330. Paul Robinson, defending, said Spiteri had family in Cyprus on his mother’s side. He had gone there, had to sort out some difficulties and stayed there for two-and-a-half years.

Mr Robinson added: “He did bury his head in the sand to some extent regarding the child support. However, he is now back in this country and working.”
