Cyclist rushed to hospital after accident

A cyclist is in hospital with serious head injuries after he swerved into the path of a car on a busy dual carriageway.

Pedal cyclist Timothy Wilson, 48, from Lostock Hall, was travelling towards Southport on the A59 Longton bypass, close to Walmer Bridge, when the smash happened at 9pm on Monday.

Police said it is believed he turned right into the path of a Volkswagon Golf saloon travelling in the same direction.

Mr Wilson was knocked off his bike and suffered serious head injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital's intensive care unit where he was today described as being in a "serious but stable" condition.

The road was closed for three hours while police investigators probed the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagon was said to have suffered "severe shock" but declined further treatment at hospital.

Insp Graham Smith, Lancashire police's force incident manager, said: "We believe at this stage it would appear the pedal cyclist has been travelling along the dual carriageway generally towards Southport and has turned right across the path of an oncoming Golf saloon travelling along the same carriageway and that is when the collision has occurred."

Insp Smith said Mr Wilson's relatives have been made aware of the accident.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We took one patient with serious injuries to the Royal Preston Hospital."

The accident comes less than 24 hours after 22-year-old Matthew Kirkham was killed while driving a Ford Fiesta along Liverpool New Road close to the Fox Cub pub on the A59 in Walmer Bridge.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Sgt Alan Barron of the Chorley road policing unit on 0845 125 3545 quoting log reference 1507 of March 2.
