Cyclist narrowly avoids runaway car
The scene of the accident on Blackpool Road in Ashton, Preston on Thursday
A cyclist has narrowly escaped being hit by a runaway car which careered through a shop window.
Gavin Ramage, 23, of Windsor Avenue, Ashton, was cycling along Blackpool Road yesterday when a silver Rover 75 reversed across the central reservation and into the window of the Samaritans charity shop.
It is understood the driver, a man in his 80s, had accidentally pressed the accelerator of the car and shot across the road at 30mph.
The student, who was unharmed in the incident, managed to swerve and brake before he was knocked down.
He said: “It all happened really quickly, I suddenly just saw him flying across the road and smashed into the window.
“I braked really hard and came off my bike as I swerved to avoid him.
“Fortunately, I only scuffed the handlebars of my bike, it could have been much worse.
The driver of the vehicle had been dining in the Parkside Cafe on the opposite side of Blackpool Road and had pulled away from the side of the road with the car in reverse.
He was released by firefighters and taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance for precautionary checks.
