Stepped down: Clive Grunshaw has ended his 19 year association with Wyre Council

Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has resigned as a councillor on Wyre Council.

Clive Grunshaw, who is responsible for the full range of policing work in the county, stepped down from the council role at midnight on Thursday, February 28 after 19 years.

It follows his decision to quit as Labour leader of the council in November.

He remains a county councillor for Fleetwood East, a role he has held since 1999.

A spokesman for Wyre Council confirmed the news, but declined to comment further on the reasons for Mr Grunshaw’s decision.

He said: “Councillor Grunshaw’s resignation has been announced to us and was effective as of midnight on February 28.

“We are now hoping that a by-election for the vacancy will be held at the same time as the County Council elections in May.”

Coun Grunshaw and his PCC representatives were unavailable for comment when approached by the Evening Post.

Coun Grunshaw was elected as PCC on November 15 last year after gaining 79,790 votes in the election with a turnout of just 15.5 per cent across the county.

The role carries an £85,000 salary, making Mr Grunshaw the highest paid councillor in the county.

Almost immediately he was embroiled in an expenses scandal, over alleged discrepancies over mileage claims from his home in Fleetwood to county council and the now-defunct Lancashire Police Authority.

The investigation into his expenses is still ongoing.

Coun Grunshaw was a Wyre Borough Councillor for Bailey Ward from 1994 until 1999, then Councillor for Pharos Ward from 1999 onwards.

He has been a County Councillor for Fleetwood Marine, now Fleetwood East, from 1999 onwards.

The positions he has held on the County Council have included Chief Whip for the Labour Group, Chair of Overview and Scrutiny and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.

He has also been chair of 6/519 branch of the TGWU Union, member of Amicus Trade Union, chair of Lancaster and Fleetwood Constituency Labour Party, board member of Fleetwood Credit Union, and also member of the Management Committee of the McKee Centre.
