County set for wintry blast

Lancashire is set to be hit by a barrage of wintry weather early next week.

Forecasters from the Met Office have issued a “be aware” warning that the county will be hit by a “wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow showers” which will leave roads and pavements covered in ice.

It added that higher parts of the county could expect “a few centimetres” of snow with a risk of some lower-lying areas also getting a covering of snow.

A spokesman added that a blast of “wet and very windy weather” is expected to hit the county throughout Tuesday with the potential to cause problems on the road network and public transport.

He said: “The public should be aware of the possibility of strong winds causing disruption, in particular for those looking to travel on Tuesday.”

Oh, incidentally, the forecast for the NW of England on the Met Office (as of 7.49am, at least) reads: A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow showers will lead to icy stretches on roads and pavements on Monday morning. A few cm of snow is likely, generally above about 200 m, though with the risk of some at lower levels too......though I'm sure mickey knows better.

I awoke to the sound of clattering against my bedroom window which sounded like hail although, aware that there was no possible way commentors on this website could be wrong, I put it down to the more likely possibility of a plague of locust and left my coat on the hook as a wandered to my local paper shop and, by golly, I got caught in two heavy hailstorms and another which I can only describe as "wintry." My New Year's resolution is not to take advice from weather forecasters with names like 'BikerBoy' and 'Travelling Man.'

from the met office----- A spell of wet and very windy weather will affect the UK during Tuesday. The public should be aware of the possibility of disruption due to strong winds, e.g. to travel, on Tuesday morning in most parts and during the afternoon across northeastern Scotland. A spell of heavy rain will also affect many regions, with a risk of localised flooding over parts of Wales and northwest England.--- no mention of snow there then

Looked at the Met office site and half of Lancashire - the eastern bit - is at risk. The rest of us are outside the risk area. Must be a quiet news day!

Don't know where the LEP gets this info from. The Metoffice weather forecast doesn't show any ice, snow, sleet or sub-zero temperatures for this area. Another bit of sensationalist journalism?
