A Penwortham Town Councillor has stepped down half way through his term.
Conservative David Nicholson, who has represented the Whitefield ward for the past two years, made the announcement to council chiefs before the next meeting to be held on March 6.
It is not known why Coun Nicholson, who has held senior positions in the health service, made the decision.
Michael Cronin, Democratic services manager at the council, said he was sad to hear the news.
He said: “David’s resignation is a blow.
“We will miss him, as he’s been a big part of our work since he was elected two years ago.”
The vacancy for the Whitefield ward will be immediately advertised.
If a poll is claimed in writing by 10 local government electors in Penwortham, a by-election will take place within 60 days.
If a poll is not claimed, the Town Council itself will be able fill the vacancy by co-option as soon as practicable.
Mr Cronin added: “A notice will go up, and a poll will almost certainly be called.
“There will be a by-election and I would think that it will take place at the same time as the Lancashire County Council elections in May.”
Earlier this month, Howick and Priory Councillor Mary Robinson announced that she was looking to stand down, after being selected to run as MP for Cheadle.
Mr Cronin added: “It will be interesting to see what happens now.”
