A new pizza takeaway is set to open in a former bank after an application was given the green light.

Papa Johns Ltd lodged plans to convert the former Barclay’s Bank in Liverpool Road, Penwortham, which were approved by councillors this week.

But local representatives said they were “greatly disappointed” with the decision, fearing traffic and vehicle movements would cause disruption in the area.

Plans had been recommended for approval by planning officials, who said the benefits of making use of a vacant building and employment opportunities outweighed any possible harm.

But ward Coun David Howard said: “There are very few parking spaces behind the premises and it’s shared parking during the day.

“The parking bays are quite limited and then you are going to have these delivery vehicles, and I have no idea where they are going to park or hang around while they are waiting for pizzas.

“I think when residents realise what’s going on we are due some serious complaints.”

He added: “The town council had objected on the grounds that we have enough hot food takeaways and it is reducing the diversity of what’s on offer in the area.”

In a report to members of South Ribble Council planning committee, officers said: “Highway objection has been raised due to the impact on highway safety due to increased movements over the footway; these movements already take place.

“On balance however and taking all other evidence into account, it is considered that the benefits of this proposal which include making use of a vacant premises and employment opportunities, outweigh any possible harm, and as such the application is recommended for approval subject to the imposition of conditions.”
