Champion-chip title up for grabs in battle of the friers

It will soon be in the bag for one first class fish frier to takeaway the title of our Chippy of the Year.

We are now down to the top 10 most popular fish and chip shops in our sizzling competition to find the area’s best.

And now it is up to you, the Evening Post readers, to vote for your favourite and help it scoop the champion-chip.

We have whittled the list down from 30 to 10 and there are some tasty challengers on the shortlist - including two batter rivals from the same Preston street. Noblett’s in Plungington Road is up against King Kod a few hundred yards down the way. Both have plenty of supporters in the city’s busy student quarter.

“It’s a wonderful honour to be voted into the top 10, but obviously we’d like to win the title,” said Jonathan Noblett, whose menu mixes traditional fish with sea bass, red snapper and smoked mackerel. “Lancashire has lots of top-rated fish and chip shops, so to be selected as one of them is a great feeling.”

Not far from Noblett’s and King Kod is another top 10 chippy on the list - Jit’s Plaice in Ripon Street. There the cod and haddock compete with more exotic dishes like spicy fish, stuffed chillies, curries and chicken pakoras.

“Business is great, especially since we were nominated in the LEP Chippy of the Year” said Anil Panchal. “It’s a wonderful honour that people have been voting for us.”

The other fish and chip shops on the final list are: Godwins of Pope Lane, Penwortham, Market Street Chippy in Preston, Tasty Plaice in Linden Drive, Lostock Hall, Railway Road Chippy in Chorley, Skippers in Talbot Row, Euxton, Hamilton Road Chippy in Chorley and Umberto’s in Watery Lane, Preston.
