Campaigner’s bid for elected mayor

Referendum: John Wilson

Referendum: John Wilson

Preston could join the ranks of London and Liverpool if the public backs a campaign for an elected mayor.

Former councillor John Wilson has set up the drive to give the city’s figurehead greater independence.

The move would mean that rather than being elected by the ruling party, the mayor would be elected independently by the people of Preston.

However the current system can not be changed without a referendum in which the voters choose to either keep the current system or have an elected mayor.

Mr Wilson, from Fulwood, said: “The mayor would be elected by the whole of Preston, not just the ward and party they represent.

“They would have an executive responsibility to pick a cabinet from the majority party.

“What we need is a young, vibrant person who has a passion for Preston.

“We need someone to grasp the nettle and say ‘this is what we really want for Preston’.”

Mr Wilson has set up a petition calling for a referendum on the issue.

If more than 5009 people sign up the city will be asked to decide if it wants an elected mayor or a mayor selected by the leading political party.

Only people registered to vote in the city are eligible to sign the petition and all signatures will be verified..

A spokesman for Preston City Council said: ““Any elector can petition for a referendum on whether to have an elected Mayor. To trigger a referendum, the petition must have at least 5,027 signatures of people registered to vote in Preston. ”

Mr Wilson will be canvassing in Preston city centre at locations including the bus station, flag market and covered market.

Due to the verification process it is not possible to sign the petition online.
