Rising to challenge: Tom Wright, joint boss of String Computer Systems, and his staff

A businessman challenged his staff to increase turnover – and promised to do a forfeit if they did.

Workers at Preston-based String Computer Systems rose to the challenge.

Now joint boss Tom Wright is keeping his end of the bargain – by running his first ultra marathon!

Thirty-nine-year-old Tom, technical director at the firm in Leeward Road, Ashton, challenged his staff to deliver a turnover increase of 20 per cent in 2013.

The challenge helped spur 10 staff at the IT support business to win 25 new clients and post the best performance in the company’s 17-year history.

Today Tom was attempting to complete his first-ever 35-mile ultra marathon around the Isle of Anglesey.

Tom said: “I enjoy running. But I’ve never done anything like this before.

“Am I nervous? Absolutely! But I was the one who issued the challenge. And everyone at String Systems pulled together to make sure we enjoyed a brilliant year.

“Now it’s up to me to make sure I meet my challenge too.”

The Anglesey Ultra Marathon is part of the Endurance 4 Life Coastal Trail Series.

Unlike traditional marathons, Tom will run on a mixture of fell, trail and tarmac.

In addition to the challenge set by workmates, Tom will have the added motivation of raising money for Fylde Sharks Disability Swimming Club.

The club continues to provide physiotherapy support for Tom’s young son Freddie, who suffered a stroke at the age of five.

String Computer Systems Ltd supplies computer hardware, software and maintenance services throughout the North West of England.
