Businessman killer has throat slashed in jail
Kenneth Iddon, who was murdered in February 2004
A convicted murderer who killed a Lancashire businessman escaped with his life after he had his throat slashed by a fellow prisoner.
John Climo, 42, was attacked in the snooker room of Full Sutton Prison in York where he is serving 30 years for the murder of Chorley businessman Kenneth Iddon in February 2004.
Asif Yaqub jumped on Climo, slashing at his jugular vein with a razor blade.
Hull Crown Court heard last Friday that the attack on April 30 last year was carried out after 32-year-old Yaqub made a decision he was going to kill Climo.
He was jailed for a minimum of 30 years in 2006 after killing the wealthy businessman on the driveway of his home in Ormskirk.
Crown barrister Jharna Jobes said Yaqub approached Climo in the snooker room and, without any warning, slashed his victim’s neck with an improvised weapon made from two razor blades melted into a plastic knife, causing a six-inch wound. She said he then fled to his cell, pushing the weapon out of the window. It was recovered later by guards. She said Yaqub had confessed to guards he had attempted to murder Climo.
He was given a life sentence with a minimum 10 year term.
