Burglar struck while couple slept

A burglar who raided a couple’s home while they slept upstairs has been jailed for nine months.

Nathan Redmond, 39, stole £3400 of money and electrical goods when he crept into the house in Douglas Lane, Grimsargh.

Preston Crown Court heard that although the couple were not disturbed during the raid they woke to discover two laptops, an iPhone, a briefcase and some cash had been stolen.

The laptops were later recovered at Fox Street Night Shelter , in Preston, where Redmond - now of no fixed address - had been staying.Redmond admitted committing the offences to police officers following his arrest and pleaded guilty to burglary and breaching a community order when he appeared at Preston Magistrates Court.

Redmond has previous convictions which include two house burglaries six years ago bu the court was told he had a three year gap in his offending when he had made a “decent fist” of addressing his drug problems..

The court heard he had taken steps to address his drug problem and had looked into rehabilitation programmes he could undertake following his release from prison.

He was tempted to ask the court to impose a lengthier sentence so he could undertake rehabilitation in prison.

Recorder Mukhtar Hussain, sentencing, said: “You do have an absolutely dreadful record as you have acknowledged.

“There is no doubt these offences cross the custody threshold and I must impose a custodial sentence today.”

He was jailed for eight months with a further 28 days for breaching the order.
