A handyman put his skills to the test to transform his children's room into a life-sized replica of a high-tech Star Wars spaceship.

David Bonney, 47, surprised his children Dylan, nine, and George, eight, with a new bedroom based on the hit movie series’ iconic Millennium Falcon.

He said: “The bedroom needed doing up because it hadn’t been done in about eight years and I just wanted to do something special for them and set myself a challenge.”

He said: “They absolutely love it.” The father-of five, of Lockerbie Avenue, Anchorsholme, spent a month hiding his efforts from Star Wars superfans Dylan and George, who had no idea their sci-fi fantasies were about to come to life.

David said: “Star Wars is one of their favourite films that they like to watch.

“I grew up with Star Wars and I have all the films so they ended up watching them with me. Their favourite characters are Darth Maul and Darth Vader.

“We had told them I was redecorating because we were moving them into another room.

“When they went out for the day I put it all together. They were speechless, especially Dylan. They were overwhelmed.”

Dylan and George’s new bedroom features a Millennium Falcon-style control panel, with flashing LED lights, buttons and levers, USB ports and controls for their television and X-Box.

Mobile phone technician David said: “It’s practical as well as being fun and having things to play with.”

Dylan said: “When I saw the room I was gobsmacked. I’m more than happy.

“I love Star Wars because I like the way they dress the characters and the way they speak. I like the baddies because they are really strong at first and you never know who’s going to win.

“The room is definitely a lot better now. My brother thinks the same. It looked like someone else had come in and done it, but I did know it was my dad.”

His brother George added: “I felt shocked and very, very happy.”

Now David and wife Emma fear that Dylan and George are enjoying their new adventures in the Millennium Falcon too much.

David said: “We can’t get them out of their room now. We can’t tell them to go to their room if they have been naughty any more!”
