Council bosses were to discuss ways of minimising fraud and overpayments.

South Ribble Council’s governance committee was due to meet at West Paddock in Leyland tonight, for a national fraud initiative members’ briefing.

The meeting was due to bring councillors up to date on the Audit Commission’s work over the last year and how the council is contributing to the work.

A report to be presented to the meeting revealed the benefit fraud investigation team had identified £35,000 in overpayments and £19,000 council tax discount which was incorrectly awarded.

Across the country the national fraud initiative identified overpayments totalling £229m since 2010 which was a 25% increase on the previous period.

It also led to 164 employees being dismissed or being asked to resign because they had no right to work in the UK, 235 properties were recovered for social housing and 731 people were prosecuted.

Fraud detectives also confiscated 31,937 blue badges and 51,548 concessionary travel permits were cancelled.

The meeting was due to take place at 6pm.
