A shop thief assaulted a police officer and wrecked a door and lottery stand in a shop, a court has heard.

Daniel Patrick Hutchinson, 22, of Latham Street, Preston, stole a packet of 99p Bombay mix from Premier Stores in Preston on January 23.

The incident escalated when police were called, with the defendant spitting at the officer, and using racist language, Preston Magistrates Court was told.

Hutchinson was in drink at the time of the theft.

He admitted theft, assaulting a PC and criminal damage on the day of his trial.

He was jailed for 11 weeks suspended for 12 months and must pay an £80 surcharge and £250 compensation.
