Police are tackling an increase in the number of bicycle thefts by offering cyclists the chance to have their property security marked free of charge.
Officers will be at Adlington Library in Railway Road, Adlington, Chorley, from 5pm on Friday, March 8 offering crime prevention advice and bike coding.
Flick Riding, Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) for Coppull and Adlington, said: “We have seen a slight increase in the number of bike thefts in the area recently, so we are keen to remind residents of the measures they can take to keep their property safe.
“Bicycles should be kept secure at all times with an appropriate lock and kept in a garage, outbuilding or inside a house wherever possible.
“By having your bike security marked, it also helps to deter thieves and makes it easier for your bike to be returned in the event of theft.”
In the UK, a bicycle is stolen on average every minute.
Less than five per cent of those bicycles are returned as they are difficult for the police to identify the owner.
Information about bike thefts can be reported to Lancashire Police on 101.
