A young fish frier has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Cem Oktem, of Packet Bridge Fish & Chips in Carnforth, is one of five young up and coming fish friers that have been shortlisted in the Young Fish Frier of the Year Award category at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2013, run by Seafish.

Cem, said: I’ve put my all into making it to the final this year and I’m so happy to be shortlisted for the final award.

“After taking part in a workshop, organised by Seafish for young fish friers, I was inspired to work hard and I understood the importance of producing quality fish and chips.

Cem and the other finalists took part in a gruelling judging process which included testing their knowledge on matters including preparation and cooking of fish and chips, health and safety and customer service.

Judges then whittled the competition down to the final five after the finalists were invited to participate in a cook-off at the National Fish Friers (NFF) Training School in Leeds.

Following an in-shop visit Cem will then go up against four other contenders at a glitzy evening awards ceremony in London at the prestigious Lancaster London hotel on January 24, next year.

It will also coincide with the The National Fish & Chip Awards awards 25th anniversary

Nikki Hawkins, foodservice and events manager at Seafish, said: “This year’s competition will be the fiercest yet, They are a credit to the industry.”
