Two friends were assaulted as they walked home from a house party in Clayton-le-Woods last Saturday.
The assault took place around 11.30pm when the 40-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were walking along a path from Barleyfield to Radburn Brow by The Lord Nelson pub.
They were approached by two women, with one claiming the man had attacked her.
As they carried on walking towards Radburn Brow they were confronted by a man, who launched an unprovoked and sustained attack on both people.
The man sustained bruising to the ribs and face and his friend bruising to her left eye and small cuts to her face.
PC Stuart Hart said: “This assault has left both friends deeply shaken.
“It has happened between housing estates in an area which is partly lit and is not covered by CCTV.”
