Arrest over historic sex attack on woman
Base: Preston Police Station
Police probing a sex attack on a woman 13 years ago have made an arrest, it was revealed today.
The victim, who was 20 at the time, was walking home down Calder Street in Ashton, Preston, following a night out on December 11, 1999.
She was dragged into an alleyway and subjected to a sex attack.
Just eight weeks earlier a string of assaults on five other young women sparked fears a serial sex attacker was on the loose.
It remains unclear if this attack is linked to those but police are believed to be making inquiries.
Detectives from Preston CID arrested a 31-year-old Preston man after new evidence, which cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, came to light.
The victim, who is now 33 and has since moved away, has been told of the development.
Det Sgt Mark Burns said: “I would like to reiterate that this is an on-going investigation. Regardless of date, when serious offences like this happen we will never give up in looking for the truth.
“New information has come to light which has enabled us to further progress our enquiry and we are keeping those involved updated.
“A number of incidents took place at the same time but we are focusing on this one particular case at the moment.”
The man was first arrested back in July at his home in the city on suspicion of sexual assault on a female.
Files have been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider whether or not to charge him.
He is due to answer his police bail today.
The other sexual assaults in 1999 were:
• Friday September 7, Friargate • Monday September 24, Church Street • Saturday October 6, Ringway • Sunday Ocober 7, Pollard Street • Monday October 29, Marsh Lane.
