Armed police surround pub

Waiting for Video...

Armed police surrounded a pub just yards from Lancashire Constabulary headquarters at Hutton after a man in an adjacent flat made threats to electricity staff who had come to cut him off.

The man was reported to have an axe on the premises next door to the Anchor Inn in Liverpool Road and an armed response unit was despatched from its base less than 300 yards away.

After a tense stand-off lasting around 20 minutes, during which time the gun-toting cops ringed the building, the man came out and surrendered.

A police spokesman said: “We had reports that a man had become aggressive after someone had called to disconnect the flat’s power supply.

“Some threats were made and there was talk of there being an axe in the premises. So armed officers atttended and, after about 20 minutes, the man came out of the premises of his own volition and was arrested.

“No-one was hurt and the incident was all over in a short time.

“During the incident we had to close a couple of roads in the vicinity, but they were quickly reopened.”
