By midday Sir Tom Finney Way outside Deepdale was lined by fans turning out to pay their last respects.

Among the crowd was a group of children from Sherwood Primary School in Fulwood.

Teacher Paul Whelan said: “I have brought our boys football team and girls team here.

“We also allowed parents to pick up their children from school and bring them.

“There are 66 children in total from our school.

“Sir Tom was Preston’s most famous son and for our children this is a history lesson in our time.”
