Action after pubs sell to youngsters

Licensees in part of Lancashire have been issued a warning after bar staff were caught selling alcohol to underage youngsters.

Police officers, assisted by trading standards and teenage volunteers, carried out a test purchase operation in the Ribble Valley earlier this month, to ensure licensed premises were meeting responsibilities to prevent sales to young drinkers.

Eight pubs were visited in Whalley, near Clitheroe, and Longridge with five of them allowing a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy to buy bottles and pints of beer.

Staff and the premises licence holder for each pub will now meet trading standards and police where a decision will be made about further action.
