Academy has the X-factor!

Preston's got its own rival to the X-factor – and has snapped up the show's sponsor into the bargain.

Fulwood Academy put on its own version of the popular contest in a bid to showcase the depth of talent at the popular high school.

The contestants got the seal of approval from Carphone Warehouse boss Charles Dunstone, whose company sponsors the X-factor.

The multi-millionaire is also the money man behind the Academy and was among judges at the end-of-term show.

Fulwood's got talent is now in its third year and over the past few weeks has seen more than 50 acts audition for a place in the grand final.

This was the biggest competition to date, which saw the acts eventually cut down to the final eight over several rounds.

A specially-selected audience, made up of students who had gained more than 100 house points, were invited to watch the show. Other students who had worked hard and contributed to their tutor groups helped make up the 300-strong audience.

For the first time at the final, students were asked to contribute to the voting process – using the same kind of hand-held pads used on TV quiz shows.

Following the judges' decision, which reduced the number of acts from eight to four, pupils voted for their two favourite acts. Judges, made up of two teachers, interim principal Kath Moss and Mr Dunstone, decided the overall winner, singing group The Fighters made up of Reece Miller, Kayleigh Whiteside, Rheannah Miller and Letitia Grant-Browne.
