Shocked staff today told how vandals as young as eight have caused £3,000 damage at a children’s nursery and school.
Staff and pupils at Brockholes Wood Nursery and CP School on Brant Road, Farringdon Park, Preston, have been plagued by youngsters trespassing in the school grounds and smashing up toys in the playground since the start of the summer holidays.
But last weekend the vandalism stepped up when the children scaled the school roof, broke roof slates and smashed two skylights.
Fortunately the area’s community beat manager, PC Zaid Hadi caught eight youngsters in the act and took them to their parents.
Today he said: “ Their parents were shocked and disgusted, particularly as many of them have close links with the school, because the children are pupils at the school, or have siblings there.
“Most are below the age of criminal responsibilty so we are looking for a restorative justice resolution and are working with the parents, children and staff.”
Lesley Thomas, who manages the nursery, said: “ It has been going on all summer. We come in each Monday morning and do the dreaded walk to see the damage.
“As we have little storage space we have to leave some toys outside. Some of the babies’ toys had been smashed on the ground and tables and chairs broken.
“But last weekend was something else. There were slates on the ground and two skylights were broken, which will cost £800 each to repair.
“It’s very sad because the people they are doing a disservice to are themselves.”
