Rustlers ad cooks up controversy
A Kirkham company is causing a stir with its latest TV advert.
Nearly 100 complaints have been made to the Advertising Standards Authority over the Rustlers hot food snack commercial.
Rustlers, owned by Kirkham-based Kepak Convenience Foods, says its current advert is tongue in cheek and appeals to people's sense of fun.
The advert, which has been made to promote its new range of snacks taking just 70 seconds in the microwave, features a young man and woman returning to the lad's flat after a night out. He goes into the kitchen, puts his Rustlers burger into the microwave and as it moves round, the woman on his sofa spins round and ends up semi-naked.
In response to the controversy, Rustlers has asked if Britain has lost its sense of humour.
Mike Lorimer, senior brand manager at Rustlers, said: "We believe that the advert is tongue in cheek and empowers women, as it is the woman in the ad who has decided to take her clothes off, not the man. Britain is rightly proud of its sense of humour which is renowned throughout the world and these complaints make me think have we lost this?
"This advert is designed to appeal to people's sense of fun. The feedback we have had has been really positive.
"The whole theme is that you can get a tasty Rustlers snack in just 70 seconds, there's no waiting round so you are fast forwarding to the best parts of life".
The Rustlers range includes a flame grilled quarter pounder with cheese, a flame grilled chicken breast sandwich and a chicken fillet Tikka Naan.
Kepak Convenience Foods has become one of the key drivers of the chilled snacks category in the UK.
KCF operates out of four sites, Kirkham, Glasnevin, Buchan and Cork.
