NW aerospace is recovery blueprint

A senior Government minister has hailed the North West aerospace industry as an "exemplary model" for the rest of the country to follow.

Defence equipment minister Quentin Davies said the work of the regional North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) to upskill local supply chain companies should be used as a model for other sectors of industry.

The alliance, which has hundreds of member companies throughout Lancashire, recently received a 7m boost to develop its Aerospace Supply Chain Excellence programme (ASCE) to its next phase.

The minister was speaking at the opening of the NWAA's new office at the South Preston Office Village, near Bamber Bridge, on Wednesday which will house its ASCE team.

He said: "I think that the work you have done on the ASCE programme is exemplary and is a model that I think should be held up in other sectors and other regions.

"Aerospace is very hi-tech, adds a lot of value and there are a lot of exciting career prospects, it is very important to take these skills and maintain these markets."

NWAA chief executive Martin Wright said the opening of the new office was "a milestone" in its work to evolve the local supply chain to meet the changing needs of aerospace and advanced engineering firms.

He said: "Our programme will continue to be based on the development of an advanced cluster requiring very high levels of skill to compete in the global market.

"We recognise that skills development is a fundamental issue for the North West region which has such strength in manufacturing from apprentices and beyond."
