A machine which fires sonic waves and can freeze one of the country's biggest killers... is coming to Lancashire bedrooms.
Rather than being something out of a science fiction movie, the machine is actually a modified hoover which is being rolled out by a new bug-busting service.
Former engineer Ian Entwistle, of Downham Road, Leyland, has launched a franchise of mattreCLEAN, a service which offers to rid mattresses and sofas of dust mites, across South Ribble and Preston.
The bugs are the main cause of asthma which affects more than one in nine Britons and can kill. More than a million such bugs can be found in every double mattress.
Ian said: "In Europe it is accepted practice that you clean your mattress, sofas or any soft furnishings of dust mites as part of your everyday cleaning, but that does not happen over here.
"In South Ribble alone it is estimated there are 10,500 people suffering from some form of asthma, that is one in every eight children and one in every 12 adults.
"Britain has one of the worst records for asthma in the world, so there is quite clearly a market for it in this country and I am confident the service will take off."
The equipment used to remove the bugs involves a high-powered vacuum cleaner and specialised chemicals which are the only way of ridding your bed of mites.
Vaccuming your mattress with a conventional cleaner will only partially remove the bugs – which are then breeding again the next night.
Ian said: "Essentially it is a high-powered vaccum cleaner fitted with a set of UVC lights, so when you run it over a surface like a mattress it emits sonic waves which releases the bugs.
"The vaccum then sucks them in and the UVC lights kill them, or removes the humidity from the air which the bugs need to survive."
The mattreCLEAN method has been used in central Europe since the early 1960s, but has only arrived in the UK in the last five years and also has North West franchises in Blackpool and Greater Manchester.
