A popular group is celebrating an award win after boosting the number of its members.
Garstang’s Royal British Legion Women’s Section competed against other UK branches to win an award for the most increased membership.
Laura Nixon, from Garstang, was responsible for a recruitment drive which nearly doubled numbers from 38 to 74.
The branch has also raised more than£1,000 for Legion funds.
Laura, who is also the toast of the WRVS and a veteran charity worker, said much of the recruitment had taken place at the branch’s annual fund-raising coffee morning.
She said: “The women’s section is not a support group for the British Legion – we are our own organisation.
“We are women working for women.
“I like to say it’s girl power!”
She added that becoming a member costs just £6.10 a year and this helps pay for valuable work which benefits the families of forces’ veterans.
To join the Garstang branch, contact Laura on 01995 604891 or write to her at 20 Hazelhurst Drive, Garstang, PR3 1WB.
Laura has recently retired after 22 years of voluntary work with the WRVS, with whom she was the luncheon club organiser and cook.
