Legal action is being taken to move a group of travellers from Penwortham.

A group of around 10 families pitched their caravans up on grassland near the Penwortham Holme sports fields and allotments on Monday.

Several cars and vans can also be seen at the site, alongside grazing ponies.

Calls were made to South Ribble Council which owns the land, and officers were dispatched to speak to the travellers.

They were told they intend to stay for a week and now le legal processes are beginning so that the council can formally evict them from the land.

Councillor Peter Mullineaux, South Ribble Council cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Street Scene said: “We are aware of the problems of travellers at Penwortham Holme and are in the process of taking the necessary action and preparing court proceedings to move the travellers on.”

Typically when travellers arrive unexpectly in an area, council officers issue families with items such as bags and bins, but in this case, it is believed the families were already equipped.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed it was aware of the issue, but would not be taking action unless there were reports of criminal activity.
