Lancashire's troops join major 36-hour Afghan offensive
Troops from Lancashire have been involved in a 36-hour offensive to clear insurgents from part of Afghanistan, military chiefs said.
Soldiers from the Scots Guards, which recruits from Lancashire, Cumbria and the Isle of Man, were involved in the major land and air operation to the south of Nad'Ali in Helmand province.
Operation Moshtarak was planned to remove insurgents from areas of Helmand.
Major General Gordon Messenger said the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police had been more engaged in the leadership and planning of the operation than ever before.
He said: "In the last 36 hours there's been a combined aviation and ground operation to the south of Nad'Ali, but the main groups involved in phase two have yet to commence."
He said the troops involved in the operation "will be remaining there with an enduring ground holding presence in that area."
