Knife raiders jailed for 14 years

Two masked ex-soldiers who carried out a series of terrifying knife raids have been locked up for a total of 14 years.

Neil Fitzpatrick, 24, and Leon Rathmill, 23, stole cash from three shops in Tarleton, Longton and Walton-le-Dale during a violent crime spree across the North West.

Fitzpatrick, of Kearsley Avenue, Tarleton, admitted eight armed robberies and was jailed for nine years.

Accomplice Rathmill, from Middleton, Manchester, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to one of the robberies and possessing cocaine.

Both men had been "dishonourably" discharged from the army, Preston Crown Court heard.

One female shop employee said she was physically sick after the ordeal and still had trouble sleeping.

* SEE The Lancashire Evening Post on Tuesday for the amazing story of how Fitzpatrick and Rathmill were brought to justice.
