Killer dog strikes for third time

A killer dog is believed to have attacked another pet in Lancashire for a THIRD time this year.

Buddy, a 19-month-old Border terrier, was attacked as his owners shopped for a car at Preston's Jaguar garage on the dock.

Karen and John Tanyon, from St Annes, had let him out of their car for a stretch when the attack happened on Sunday.

The other dog came out of nearby bushes and went for the pet's throat, despite shouts from its owner.

John, a self employed gardener, grabbed Buddy and the owner grabbed the other dog but it would not let go.

The terrifying attack was caught on CCTV cameras at the Jaguar garage and the footage has now been passed to police in Lea.

Karen, 44, who works with children with special needs, said: "I feel very angry. The owner knew straight away what the dog was going to do because he shouted, "No, no no". If he knew what the dog was like why didn't he have it muzzled or on a lead?

"He had to practically strangle it to get it to let go of Buddy.

"John has injured his hand because he had to strike the dog so hard to make it let go. I really thought it was going to go for him.

"We went straight to the police station and then to the vets.

"Now we have discovered this is the third time this dog has attacked.

"It made me glad that we reported it because it must be stopped. But we feel angry that it has happened again."

Police believe the dog is the same animal that left Gladys Fullalove, 79, distraught when it killed pet dog Barney, 14, after it jumped out of a back yard in Ashton.

The same dog almost killed Staffordshire bull terrier Bertie when Alison Brandes, a relative of his owners, took him for a walk down Navigation Way at Preston Dock in January.

Her husband Chris, 39, broke his fingers in the struggle to stop the attack.

Police confirmed that they believe the dog alleged to have been involved in Sunday's attack has attacked two others.

Sgt Dave Brown of Lea Police, said police were hoping to pursue a prosecution against the dog's owner but were waiting for a response from the city's dog wardens.

He said: "We have identified the dog and its owner and inquiries are on going to speak with him.

"We report all incidents to the dog wardens and they are logged on a dog bite register.

"Usually the guidance is that there are two incidents to go for a prosecution. But it still has to be determined if a dog is out of control.

"There is a big grey area that makes investigating these matters difficult.

"The breed isn't listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act so we have to look to other legislation as to whether we could prosecute for the dog being out of control.

"We want action – we don't want it to be a child next time."
