An outraged home owner grabbed a burglar as he tried to flee on her bike with bags full of her jewellery.

Matthew Taylor, 29, of Sycamore Grove, Lancaster, fled Helene Cooper’s home on Chapel Lane, Ellel, Lancaster, despite a brave attempt to stop him, but was arrested after his image was put on Facebook.

She tried to stop him by grabbing him and the bags but he was able to move more quickly

Preston’s Sessions House Court heard on July 16, the victim had been at home expecting a parcel delivery but had realised she had to go out.

Taylor, who saw a note she had left for the courier, smashed her patio windows and when she got back she found he had rifled through her belongings.

Prosecuting, David Farley said: “She tried to stop him by grabbing him and the bags but he was able to move more quickly.”

The court heard Taylor stole £3,000 jewellery, including a sentimental £1,500 ring, and gold bangles, which have never been recovered.

Wearing a black hoodie, Taylor, who has 30 convictions for 62 offences, showed no emotion in the dock.

Jailing him for 16 months, Judge Ian Leeming QC said: “The consequences for Miss Cooper are distress and sadness at her property being stolen particularly the jewellery because of the sentimental attachment.”
