Members of Preston’s Jamaica National Association flocked to the Flag Market to celebrate Jamaica’s 53rd year of Independence.

The Jamaican flag was raised above the Town Hall, where many united to sing the National Anthem with pride.

Coun Margaret McManus, the Mayor of Preston, said: “The atmosphere was fantastic. They sang their national anthem loud and clearly and with such pride.

“They all waited until the flag was raised, and then all sang their National Anthem altogether. They were so positive about where they come from.”

A social gathering was being held at Jalgos socal club today, and a church service tomorrow at St. Matthew’s Church in Preston.

Association member Maxine Grant said the flag-raising was a terrific event.

She said: “We in Preston are happy to celebrate 53 years of independence in a happy atmosphere with the community.”
