A Christmas feast of family fun comes to Preston’s Flag Market as the Frozen North Winter Weekender arrives from tomorrow.
The frolics centre on the Flag Market, Harris Museum, and pop-up Tundra Bar this weekend from Friday to Sunday.
The Flag Market comes alive with a host of characters inhabiting a pop-up forest of neon shards alongside giant illuminated inflatables (pictured above.)
On Saturday, children can meet Sparky the Robot, made from recycled materials – and with a habit of squirting onlookers with water!
There is interactive street theatre and experimental installations from local arts festival group MAPS, while the Harris hosts a Grimms Fairytale story-telling session with Wooden Spoons Theatre and a creative Christmas workshop in a yurt in the Rotunda.
Even tiny babies can join the fun with a Cello Babies Disco Tent at the Harris, where kids, aged up to two, can feel the cello’s vibrations and dance in the light of the disco ball.
Dads can join a retro gaming session in the Tundra Bar, while everyone can make a Christmas decoration and put it on the tree with a wish for the year ahead, in a session organised by Preston’s Safelink project.
Adnan Bayyat, of the Love and Etiquette Foundation, will be teaching the art of origami and designing a series of lotus flowers from recycled paper.
There will also be three screenings of the Preston Motion Picture Project’s film, a day-in-the-life portrait of the city from dawn until dusk, made completely by local volunteers.
In the Tundra Bar, on both Saturday and Sunday, local artist Kelsey Stead will be needing help to construct a paper chain that encircles the entire Flag Market.
On Sunday, there’s a visit from the amazing Flying Angels, complete with golden tresses, neon halos and very silly trumpets while, throughout the weekend, there will be guided walks highlighting fascinating facts about Preston’s history, including an Eco Walk, a Pantomime Walk and a Samosa Walk.
And, for grown ups, the Tundra Bar hosts music nights, starting with the Funky Onion on Friday.
The event, which celebrates the end of our Guild Year, is organised by Preston arts organisation They Eat Culture and Preston City Council, with help from Lancashire Libraries, Lancashire County Council, Blaze, Creative Lancashire’s Soundbytes, MAPS festival, Tuff Life Boogie and many more.
