Homeless shelter aims to Go Ape with grant

Young homeless people are given the chance to get their lives back on track when they move into Merriweather Home.

The Fishergate Hill centre houses 11 young people aged between 16 and 25 in Preston city centre, providing a secure environment for them to build skills and education and forge routes into employment.

The centre's manager, Brian Evans, wants to take the group on an activity day to a Go Ape obstacle course centre, for a team and confidence building event.

He said: "It brings them together.

"If you have got young people who are involved with the other residents it is a heck of a springboard for the young people.

"It makes them a kind of team – it is very important to them."

The Lancashire Evening Post has teamed up with Barclays to give away an early Christmas present of 4,000 in grants to deserving causes.

Any school, charity, community group, sports club or society can bid for cash which will make a real difference.

The money could help fulfil a one-off project or simply to continue work in the community or reward members for their altruistic efforts during the year.

The top grant is 2,000, the next 1,000 and there will be two awards of 500 each.

To nominate your group, simply write and tell us about your organisation, and how you would use a cash award if you were a lucky winner.

Write to Heart of the Community, Lancashire Evening Post, Olivers Place, Fulwood, Preston, PR2 9ZA.

You can also e-mail competitions@lep.co.uk, download an entry coupon from lep.co.uk or collect one from our reception.

The closing date for applications is November 20.

Barclays and the Evening Post's readers will decide who most merits an award.
