The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust and NHS 111 are asking the public to consider how they can help themselves to stay healthy this winter.
It is the time of year for colds and flu, and central heating can help viruses spread. For people with existing health conditions, these illnesses can cause serious problems.
Over 23,000 patients contacted NHS 111 in the North West last year about cold/flu and cough symptoms, the majority of whom were advised to seek primary care services.
Tips on self-care include:
- rest and plenty of fluids
- Use paper tissues for your nose and dispose of them after use
- Remember antibiotics do not treat viruses like the common cold, coughs, sore throat, earache and sinusitis.
Wash your hands regularly.
Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
