A WARNING has been issued after a parasite was discovered in the water supply near Preston.

United Utilities urged residents to boil their drinking water after traces of the bug cryptosporidium – a microscopic parasite which can cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea - was found at Franklaw water treatment plant in Catterall, near Preston, yesterday.

People in Preston, South Ribble, Chorley, Wyre and the Fylde are being warned not even to brush their teeth without boiling water first.

Martin Padley, chief scientific officer at United Utilities, said last night: “The advice is being given purely as a precautionary measure as we carry out additional tests today.

“We apologise for the inconvenience but the health of our customers is absolutely paramount.”
