BOSSES at a nursing home which failed all areas of a recent inspection say they have already made “drastic changes.”

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission have published a 33 page report on its findings at Cuerden Grange Nursing Home in Station Road, Bamber Bridge.

The home failed to meet standards in all areas of the inspection and has had enforcement action taken against it in three of the nine areas.

The inspection was carried out at the beginning of September and the report was published at the end of October.

The health watchdog concluded in its report that the service was not safe, not consistently caring and not well led.

But today the owner of the home, Keith Lowe, said changes had been made since the CQC visit.

The report stated: “Appropriate arrangements had not been made to protect people from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care.

“There was a failure to report allegations of poor practice to the local authority in line with established protocols to protect vulnerable adults from abuse. There was also a failure to notify the commission of these allegations in accordance with the current regulations.

“We found that medicines were not always safely administered in line with the home’s policy and current guidance, increasing the risk of errors. The manager was not on duty when we visited but nursing staff on duty were unable to describe any current concerns with regard to medicines handling, or any action that was currently being taken to bring about improvement.

Staff had completed training relevant to their role, however, there had been no checks on their level of understanding and competency following the training.

“The service was not consistently caring. Staff confirmed they could spend little time with people chatting about issues which were important to them. We also asked the staff on two occasions to ensure a person was covered to protect their dignity. However, the majority of people living in the home were complimentary about the staff team.”

Owner Keith Lowe said: “Cuerden Grange Nursing Home has always had a fantastic reputation. Over the last year we have had a change of management and unfortunately this has had an adverse effect on the home.

“The CQC report was written over two months ago, and since then the home has undergone drastic improvements, to ensure that quality of care is at the forefront of our agenda.”

The home has been ordered to send a report by tomorrow setting out the action they will take to meet the standards.

Cuerden Grange nursing home is on the same site as its sister residential home.
