A midwife had a New Year surprise when she helped deliver her latest grandchild - from home!
Rita Hunter, 57, who has been a midwife since 1998 and worked at Royal Preston Hospital since 1990, was resting between shifts when her daughter Amy Hunter, 27, went into labour.
Amy and her partner Andy Bulcock, 31, from Fulwood, had the hospital’s first New Year baby, Corey Bulcock, weighing 5lb 6oz, at 12.39am yesterday.
Rita, 57 said: “I wasn’t on shift when the baby was born as I was trying to sleep because I knew I was in for 13 and a half hours today.
“We were communicating about pain relief and delivery during the night, so I might as well have been here really. My plan hasn’t worked - now I’m shattered.
“I’ve had three grandchildren since August. I have three daughters and five sons and each daughter has had a baby in a row. It’s been brilliant. ”
Amy said Corey was not due until January 12.
She said: “I didn’t even notice it had gone midnight here because I was a bit out of it, but I did hear the clocks chiming outside.”
Ashley Waters, 18, and Dominic Lee, 20, from Plungington, Preston, had a baby girl, Gracie-Mai Lee, at 2.34am. Weighing 7lb 5oz, the couple’s first baby was eight days overdue.
Ashley said: “I was expecting her on December 23, so this was very unexpected, but lovely.”
Rehana Dad, 32, from Fulwood, had her and her husband Akeel’s third child, Maryam Dad, at 3.28am, weighing 6lb 10oz.
They already have two boys, Abdul-Hakeem, eight, and Shezan, five.
She said: “I was hoping for a girl. She is two weeks early so it’s a nice New Year surprise. It’s going to be different to see pink around the house now!”
Amanda French, 29, and Kieron Loughnane, 24, from Ashton, Preston, had Niamh Loughnane at 5.14am, weighing 6lb 12oz.
Kieron said: “We were at a big family gathering last night and I reckon she just wanted to be a part of it when she heard all the singing!”
